چکیده

The opportunistic beamforming (OB) technique in multicellular OFDMA networks is investigated in this paper. Three cross-layer radio resource management (RRM) algorithms for OFDMA operational scenarios are considered. These algorithms build upon typical network planning practices for OFDMA systems. The first two implement an OFDMA network with opportunistic rate adaptation while the third one aims at a network which guarantees QoS provision through power control on carrier basis. The RRM algorithms are based on typical OFDMA resource allocation targets such as minimization of transmit power, maximization of throughput and interference averaging. Then, the OB concept is combined with the considered RRM algorithms and a comparative performance analysis between the two types of resulted networks (omni and opportunistic beamforming) is performed in terms of throughput, blocking probability and fairness. The simulation results suggest that OB is preferred for OFDMA systems with opportunistic rate adaptation rather than power controlled systems which offer QoS provision. According to the presented results, OB provides to OFDMA systems with opportunistic rate adaptation a ∼13% throughput gain and ∼75% gain in terms of blocking probability. In addition, it is shown that the combination of OB with interference averaging RRM algorithms has a minor beneficial impact only on the system fairness.

Adaptive Phase Rolling for Opportunistic Beamforming in OFDMA Systems with a Small Number of Users

The performance of opportunistic beamforming might be degraded if the number of users is small. This paper proposes an adaptive opportunistic beamforming technique for orthogonal frequency division multiple access systems, which can produce good results even with a small number of users. This paper also proposes a modified proportional fairness scheduling algorithm, which can further improve th...

Reduced feedback selective cluster index scheduling with user pre-selection for next generation MIMO-OFDMA systems

The joint use of Opportunistic scheduling and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) provide significant diversity gains even in environments of low mobility and scatter for which channel variations are low. The downside of opportunistic scheduling, in multicarrier systems such as OFDMA, lies in the substantial uplink overhead required to be fed back by the Mobile Stations (MSs) ...

Coordinated multicell beamforming for massive multiple-input multiple-output systems based on uplink-downlink duality

This paper studies joint beamforming and power allocation for multicell multiuser multi-antenna systems with the objective of maximising the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (max–min SINR). The authors first consider developing an iterative algorithm to achieve the optimal performance by extending the uplink–downlink duality for finite-scale wireless communication systems. The so...

Cross-layer Aspects in OFMDA Systems : Feedback, Scheduling and Beamforming

This thesis mainly studies the downlink of a wireless multiuser system, where the transmitter has limited knowledge about the communication channels of the users. Key techniques to improve the performance of such systems are, for instance, multiple antennas, multiuser diversity and orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA). Common for these techniques is that, to exploit them fully,...
